Group Guidelines
The Shuter Library Adult Book Club was created to stimulate conversations around books. Everyone is welcome to join the book club meetings as long as they follow some simple rules, the most important of which is RESPECT. All members must show respect for other members, their opinions, their contributions and their time. It is vital that everyone feels comfortable and heard, and that they get something out of participating in the group.
Basic Guidelines for all members:
-
Commit to reading the selected book
-
Be prepared for spoilers if you haven’t finished the book yet.
-
-
Come prepared: Spend some time before the meeting thinking about the book.
-
Speak Up
-
Contribute to the discussion.
-
Be Honest
-
Most of us join book clubs because we want a richer reading experience through discussion. That can only happen when we share what we really thought or felt about a book. It’s completely fine to dislike - or even hate - a book that someone else loves. Opinions should be voiced with respect for all of the other members’ opinions.
-
-
-
Listen to Others
-
Your fellow book club members want to hear your opinion - but they also want to hear everyone else’s. Don’t interrupt or dominate the discussion.
-
How the books are chosen:
Farmington Public Library in Farmington, NM offers Book Group Kits To Go. It is a resource-sharing program of the Farmington Public Library in which local book groups and libraries statewide may borrow book kits.
The list is presented to members of the book club at the end of the year. Every member has the opportunity to choose a book to lead a discussion. If someone would like to lead a meeting on a book that is not on the list they can purchase half of the books to lend to the members and the library will purchase the other half.
When meetings occur:
Meetings are held at The Shuter Library of Angel Fire on the last Wednesday of the month from
5:00pm - 6:00pm with the exception of April, November and December.
-
Meetings do not happen in April or November.
-
December’s meeting is the first Wednesday of the month.
